Advancing Justice in Health
I am deeply passionate about the right to health. At its core, health is not only an issue of individual physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, it is an issue of social justice. At no point in history was this clearer than during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a lack of access to health services and structural inequities resulted in marginalized communities bearing a disproportionate burden of cases and mortality. It exposed unjust systems and exacerbated the gulf between the “haves” and the “have nots”, both within and between nations.
Article XII emerged out of the desire to intensify work on health and human rights. We work at the intersection of law, policy and public health to support the creation of enabling environments for health. We also work with communities to support their leadership, mobilization, and advocacy for better health outcomes. Whether it's documenting the importance of community-led organizations in pandemic preparedness or researching the harmful effects of criminal laws on health, Article XII is committed to both supporting access to health services and addressing the underlying determinants of health.
Our approach is one that emphasizes collaboration and partnership. Global health is at a crossroads, acknowledging the need to re-think and invent more equitable and just ways of working. This includes developing meaningful collaborations between and among individuals and institutions in the global North and global South. Article XII aims to build on the achievements of the health and human rights field, while pursuing more equitable, sustainable and effective methods of work.
I hope you’ll join us for our journey, as advancing justice will always be a collaborative effort.
